Dirt 2 First look

Dirt 2 First Look
We kick the muddy tires of Codemasters' upcoming off-road racing sequel.
by Ryan Geddes

February 18, 2009 - In 2007, UK-based Codemasters racing studio overhauled its successful Colin McRae Rally series, adding a slick new menu system, a gorgeous graphics engine and a more comprehensive sampling of the sport's events to help attract a wider audience. The result was Dirt, an impressive new racing property that left racing game fans begging for a sequel. And being polite British types, the Codies racing team cheerily agreed to do just that. The studio officially announced Dirt 2 back in November, but details have been thin in the months to follow. That all changed this week when the developers stopped by the IGN offices to show an early version of the mud-splattered sequel, and I came away impressed. On a wall of the Codemasters racing studio is an oversized sign that reads, "Off-road racing with extreme sports attitude," and it's this design philosophy that's driven the Dirt 2 team during the game's 18 months of development to date. While the pure rally feel of Dirt is very much still the core of the experience, Dirt 2 is branching out to include new off-road events that stray from the traditional.

It's only a bumper. It can be replaced. The development team kicked off their demo with a handful of videos from real-life racing events to set the tone, starting with a scene more reminiscent of an X-Games exhibition than a rally competition. The footage shows Team Subaru driver and DC Shoes founder Ken Block taking his WRX STI over a 171-foot jump, and although stunts like that aren't the sole focus of Dirt, they're reminiscent of the new direction some elements of world rally racing are going, and it's a vibe you'll see in the game. The most obvious place you'll see this new direction is in the stadium events. Set in huge venues like London's Battersea Power Station (the scene on the cover of Pink Floyd's Animals record), and a fictional mega-venue outside of Los Angeles, these races feature tight tracks with varying grades and surfaces where you'll be battling other racers to cross the finish line first. In a single lap, you might roll over tarmac, gravel, loose dirt, a tightly packed berm and a two-foot-deep puddle of standing water. I was shown a few laps at Battersea that contained all of the above, plus a dangerous jump in the middle of the track that requires a steady hand and nerves of steel. Any good racing game needs to have rock-solid handling, and getting that just right has been a major focus of the Codemasters team. With Dirt 2, the physics wizards at Codemasters have changed the way the cars feel compared to the previous game. Each car now has realistic weight transfer modeling on all four wheels, and the entire system of how traction is transferred to tires has been updated. Whereas before the suspension as a whole had weight load treatment, now the differential and individual corners of the vehicle are independently modeled. How does that translate into car handling in the game? I'll let you know once I get behind the wheel.

The roaring crowds rally's been missing. The physics aren't the only part of Dirt 2 to get an overhaul. The third-generation Ego engine that's working under the hood has an all new lighting/rendering system that's designed to give unprecedented layers of depth to terrain and environments. The build I saw was based on pre-alpha code, and there's plenty Codemasters isn't showing off yet, but the environments already look stellar, despite missing textures, lighting, and so-called "crowd furniture." I caught a glimpse of what the developers are planning to do with particle and water effects, too, and rally fans won't be disappointed. In the races I watched, cars got progressively grimier until they looked like they'd been airbrushed with brown paint. One flick of the windshield wipers though, and you're right as rain. Water, always a rally-racer's enemy, has also been given close attention in Dirt 2. It may look pretty, but you don't want to plow into it unless you plan on slowing down by about 30 percent. But if you happen to land in the drink instead of hitting your apex, no worries. There's always the replay.

With 2008's Grid, Codemasters brought a clever new innovation to the world of racing games. The replay function allowed you to tap a button on your controller or PC keyboard and stop time in the middle of a race. And depending on your difficulty level, you could then rewind your race to the moment before you made your fatal error and try again. I didn't get to see it in action, but Codemasters said the replay function will play a part in Dirt 2, which will come as welcome news to those of us who don't share Travis Pastrana's deft touch on hairpin turns. Many fans of both Dirt and Grid will notice that there are definite similarities between the latter and Dirt 2, including the replay system and the introduction of tighter, circuit-based tracks. But Dirt 2 also shares another trait with its street-racing sister game: online multiplayer. While Dirt was universally well-received by critics, it also took a few hits for not having a robust competitive online multiplayer system where a group of friends could log on and race against one another in real-time. There was multiplayer, yes, but gamers wanted to see their friends racing alongside them. That's all changed in Dirt 2. Now, the new motto is all cars, all tracks, all online. In general, Codemasters is paying a lot more attention to online connectivity in Dirt 2. There's talk of including a system that will alert you in-game when one of your friends beats your lap time on a certain track (good luck, Goldstein).

Advanced lighting tech opens up new track possibilities. But before you head online to start battling real-life drivers, you'll need to get the basics down in the single-player mode. The main way you'll do that is through World Tour mode, which is the meat of the Dirt 2 experience. Codemasters is still keeping some secrets about what World Tour will include, but we do know you'll be playing as a rally driver who travels to events throughout the world to compete in races of all different types. And at least at the beginning, you won't get the Pastrana or Block star treatment. Instead, you'll start out the old-fashioned way – in an RV. In Dirt 2, your trusty RV serves as your menu system, allowing you to choose races, get updates and tweak your cars, all from the comfort of your plush captain's chair. But the RV is much more than a menu system, Codies says. It will go with you to every event, and the exterior scene will match your surroundings. So if you head to an event in China, you'll see the mountainous environment in the background and your car of choice parked outside. Hopefully I'll be able to set up my grill, too. After all, it's not rally without steaks.

Leave em' in the dust.In addition to China, Dirt 2 also takes you to California, Utah, England, Croatia, Malaysia, and other well-known rally locales. So what cars will you be using to tear up nature's pristine virtual environments? Codemasters isn't saying just yet, due to ongoing licensing discussions. But you can bet your rear differential that Subaru will be involved. I have yet to get my hands on Dirt 2 in earnest, and there's a lot Codemasters has yet to reveal about its upcoming rally racer. But from what I've seen so far, the team is set to deliver a razor-sharp off-road racing experience in September. The environmental sound is beefed up, the cars sound throatier and the damage and destructible environments are already impressing. We'll have much more on Dirt 2 as the game progresses, so check back soon for more mud, sweat and gears.

Gameloft on the rise at EA Games

Gameloft, EA Insist Gaming Market on the Rise

Posted on: Thursday, 4 December 2008, 10:00 CST It was announced on Wednesday that Electronic Arts and Gameloft, the world's two biggest mobile gaming firms, that the market is doing alright, only a day after their next principal rival, Glu Mobile, made some sever cuts to their company.Glu Mobile chief executive Greg Ballard announced on Tuesday that he is reducing both staff and his own salary as an answer to "increasing economic headwinds facing our industry."However, the company’s rivals contradicted this on Wednesday, insisting that the mobile gaming sector is flourishing.

"Concerning the iPhone, mobiles etc, we are not worried, it's all going well," a Gameloft spokeswoman stated, when inquired about a fourth-quarter demand, but insisted that it is too early to make a statement over the sales of console games.Barry Cottle, head of EA's mobile business, added that the rising adoption of smartphones is key factor for their sales, implying that a decrease in handset market sales is not hurting the industry.

"Mobile games are actually thriving right now," Cottle stated at the 'Nokia World' mobile industry conference in Barcelona. He said it is way too soon to calculate approximately the potential impact of deteriorating economies, but the company continues to thrive in all areas in spite of a drop in handset sales in Europe. The mobile games industry is anticipating a larger adoption of innovative platforms such as Nokia's N-Gage, Google's Android and Apple's iPhone to improve the market next year as allowing consumers to discover and purchase games with ease.Glu Mobile added in its statement that it will prolong its efforts to expand on their games for the three platforms regardless of cost cuts other places.

Nokia released its N-Gage platform earlier in the year, although it has just started to get steam as the company has begun to promote new smartphone models with a pre-installed gaming service."We like N-Gage . We're bullish on it," Cottle said. "As it gets incorporated the addressable market continues to grow."We really believe the N-Gage experience is the right one -- we are going to see mass market adoption," he added.

EA announced that it has created several games for Google's Android, but sells them through a third party system."As soon as they have a billing system in place we'll launch even more games," Cottle noted.-----

Eidos Bought by Square enix

Square Enix have just announced that an agreement has been reached with the board of Eidos, by which Square will purchase the creaky old British publisher for £84 million (USD$120 million).
That price represents, according to Square, a premium of 129% over Eidos' current market value. Meaning that, yes, in other words, they're paying more than what Eidos are worth.
Despite being agreed to by the men in expensive suits at both companies, for the deal to go through it has to be approved by 75% of Eidos' shareholders at the company's next meeting, which is due to take place early next month. Which it should, since the Eidos board are going to recommend shareholders sell up.

Oh Square. You look a little...desperate! Shifty delays, downward-looking finances and now paying over the board for the rights to Tomb Raider (driven into the ground), Hitman (gathering dust) and...Kane & Lynch? You're getting our common sense all Imperial Hot & bothered.
Full details on the announcement below if you're in need of bedtime reading.

Eidos stocks rise as Square Enix bids

Shares of Eidos on the London Stock Exchange skyrocketed today, more than doubling following the announcement of a generous buyout bid by Japanese RPG giant Square Enix.

Closing at only 14 pence yesterday, shares of Eidos stock on the London Stock Exchange are currently trading at 31.75 pence, or .25 pence below the 32 pence per share Square Enix has offered to buy out the company in their proposed £84.3 million bid for the troubled Tomb Raider publisher.

The market opened today with a sale of 178,000 shares selling at 27 pence per share, with more than 16 million shares changing hands as of this writing. The sheer volume of trades is staggering, especially when considering the highest volume Eidos saw through the whole of last year was

The jump is of course a direct result of Square Enix's bid, as both individuals and arbitrageurs - companies that buy large amounts of stock in order to secure small but high-volume profit with minimal risk- rush to grab as much Eidos stock as possible before the deal goes through.
While the deal isn't 100% in the bag, it's a much safer bet than investing in Take-Two Interactive stock turned out to be following Electronic Arts' failed takeover bid last year.

As an outsider to the financial world, it's a fascinating process to watch. One company makes an offer on another, and then the stock prices rise to meet that offer in the hopes of making a small profit. Once you start to make sense of the charts, it really is quite interesting. Head over to the London Stock Exchange website to experience the hot stock drama.

Left 4 dead Updates and free downloads!

Valve announced today that the Survival Pack downloadable content for Left 4 Dead will be free to both Xbox 360 and PC gamers.
The downloadable content will be available this Spring. It will introduce a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode titled Death Toll and Dead Air.
We love map packs… and love them more when they are free. Valve is awesome!!!

Also Valve has released a new patch for the PC version of Left 4 dead. The one for XBox 360, basically identical in contents, will be launched in the next few weeks.
The new update will bring a few changes to many game mechanics, and also correct a several number of bug and glitches (and we wonder if the “super-jump” will still be possible).
The full list of changes that are available in the patch can be found on this link.

Bandai - Namco Best sellers

'Tis the season for financial results. In keeping with the trend, Bandai Namco released theirs tonight, and amidst all the bean-counting, also revealed some sales figures for their tentpole franchises.

The company as a whole (remember, Bandai Namco do arcade machines, toys and cartoons) ended the quarter with a net income of ¥9,019,000,000 (USD$100 million), so on the off chance you're a shareholder, your money's still good.

More interesting to us are some global sales figures found towards the end of the company's earnings release. They show the following games shifted the following number of units:

Soul Calibur IV - 2.26 million copies

Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit - 730,000

WE SKI - 590,000

Gundam Musou 2 - 590,000

Active Life Outdoor Challenge - 550,000

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 - 530,000

Super Robot Wars Z - 510,000

Taiko Drum Master for DS 2 - 500,000

COD: World at War Map Pack soon!

Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 hits the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in March with four new maps, including one for the game's cooperative Nazi Zombie mode.

Nightlife is a multiplayer map in war-ravaged Berlin.

Knee Deep will have you attacking fortified Japanese positions in a jungle setting.

Station takes place in a bombed-out underground subway station.

Finally, Verrückt (Zombie Asylum) expands the zombie-killing co-op mode with more weapons, new Perks-a-Cola machines, electroshock defenses and endless, attacking legions of undead.
No word on the price for the pack, but I do like that they're not just adding new settings, but tweaking the zombie mode. http://www.kotaku.com/

Dead Rising 2 Confirmed

Capcom confirmed the speculation from this weekend that Dead Rising 2 is indeed on the way(AWESOME). You can get the above image in sexy wallpaper size right here if you like. And the official image definitely gives that "run down Vegas" look of some beat up neon lights. "The all new gambling paradise of Fortune City to explore" is noted below as the new locale for zombie action. Seems we get a Vegas clone in the game and I love the idea of a whole city to explore. I definitely have a wishlist for the sequel and that is a blog for the near future. Currently I am about half way through the original and loving it.The screenshots from the game have us wondering where our dear Frank is. Maybe we get a cameo appearance? Either way this looks impressive.Even better news? It is multiplatform and will be coming to PS3, PC and Xbox 360.

Blizzard Drops out of E3 2009

Despite recent confirmation that Activision Blizzard would appear at this year's E3 conference in Los Angeles, World of Warcraft creator Blizzard will not be in attendance, reports GiantBomb.
"Blizzard Entertainment will not be attending or participating in E3 2009," a representative from the firm told the gaming site.
Presumably this revelation means that Blizzard will once again be focusing on its own Blizzcon show as the arena in which the company unveils news on its upcoming Diablo III, StarCraft II and any news pertaining to the company's mega-successful MMO.
As for what will appear at E3, we expect Activision Blizzard's presence will focus on Activision properties such as the Guitar Hero games and the Call of Duty line.

Collapse of Sega

Sega is heading into a downward spiral once again, from the collapse of dream cast and the arcade scene slowly depleting, Sega reports financial results for the nine months ending in December 2008. And they're not the best of reading, The company is losing money, and as a result, will be losing staff and arcades as well.
Across Sega Sammy Holdings as a whole - which includes Sammy's pachinko/pachislot machines, along with Sega's arcade machines and home video games - a downturn in revenue has led to the company revising its forecast for the financial year, with Sega now bracing for a USD$235,424,993 loss come March.

a Business can't survive with that kind of leakage, Now Sega plans to crack down on the big spending issues and developmental process of their games to make the companies revenues sore instead of deplete.

Plans as follows
Firstly, 110 of Sega's Japanese arcade centres (presumably those in the 'burbs, not downtown Shinjuku) are to be closed or sold off.
Next, Sega will look to cut loose 560 of its 3100 employees. At the moment, this is being done via a policy of voluntary redundancies, with the first of these "volunteers" to cease employment in March 2009.
Finally, across both Sega and Sammy there will be a 20% reduction in research & development, "by consolidating titles to be developed". That means we'll likely see some upcoming Sega games canned.
There once was a time it was probably good to be a Sega employee. Especially one in Japan. Now does not seem to be one of those times.

Windows 7 Beta, Try it!

Windows 7 beta is a beast!

A lot faster than anyother OS I've ever installed on my pc faster than linux, faster than vista and xp, runs games smoothly and downloads and the internet is optimized to peek performance..this is a program especially if you plan to build a new pc, during installation Win 7 automatically finds, redirects and updates every peice of hardware on my pc with out the cds..
Tons of new features, addons and hot keys.. I'm running windows 7 ultimate witch I'm sure your thinking that you would have to have atleast 4 gigs to run it smooth like you did in vista ult but you don't! I'm running 1g ram p4 3.24 ghz and my 8800 agp gtx agp edition and This OS is fantastic, doesent bogg your system down, only problem I had was that I have a ripped version of ms office 2007 and it won't install it because its pirated (Or was it?) other than that this windows 7 is a must get OS, I'm a xp fan and hated vista because it requered high expectations out of your pc and it bogged your system to hell over time but this program is sooooo much more stable than anything out.... linux was considered the fastest os and the most stable os in the market, yes apple OS is rated below linux.. anyways windows 7 benchmarks tests indicate a high performance rating against the same PCs with different operating systems from various tech labs and beta testing teams, Much more faster and smoother.. Below is a Test from
The test systems

I’ve used two desktop systems as the test machines:
An AMD Phenom 9700 2.4GHz system fitted with an ATI Radeon 3850 and 4GB of RAM

An Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2GHz fitted with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and 1GB of RAM
The results
Here are the results of the tests for the two systems:

Lowest score =Highest preformance.

If you would like to try windows 7 beta here are the links with the steps to take inorder for Microsoft to issue you a CD key and Download.

THQ Loses Millions, is it the end?

Publisher THQ looses $191.8 Million over the holiday season witch means many of the developers and regular employees are out of the job, poor guys..

THQ plans to layoff as many as 600 employees total in the in-game development departments, mobile divisions, and studio departments witch is about 24% if its workforce, witch is a part of their plan to cut cost by $220 Million near 2010, also they plan to cut sales, cut projects for new up comming games, cut out a good precentage of the marketing and other "Important Business Departments" witch in my eyes looks like their running dry and going out of business.

Who cuts sales, marketing etc while theres a reccession going on??? dumb move, in order to stay aflot you need to make sales witch means keeping the highly skilled employees and marketing staff in order to produce the hell out of their games and still float as a business.

"This is one of the most challenging holiday retail environments I have experienced in my 18 years at THQ," said CEO Brian Farrell during a conference call, lamenting a tough retail situation. Farrell reminded analysts of the industry's growth in 2008, noting "clearly, we did not participate in that growth"

Good bye Smackdown!! Good Bye Saints row!!, Good Bye all other games that I dident care for or play!! just another example of dumb moves made by the CEO's of todays time.. Of course they wont tell you everything as of yet about what really happend at THQ, But after their Backruptcey we will know for sure.. have a good one.

36 Million For Military gamers?

Wow the Pentagon gave the Naval Research officers $36 Million dollars to fund a project of "Futuristic" Proportions.. the Operation is called the future-Immersive-training-environment (FITE) Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) Interesting.

I guess it is supposed to help our military solders fight better, live longer and become more aware threw urban and city Virtual reality scenarios. From the look of the graphics I cant see anything futuristic about it unless the picture is just the Pre-built version and nothing serious. If I was giving $36 million of the tax payers money to the military why not give everyone Xbox 360's and let them play their asses off in cod 4 or 5, isent that realistic enough?? or even splinter cell, geezz 36 Million?? I think most of us americans could use that kind of money especially us home owners or the dumb people like myself who make mistakes with credit, I blame it on fresh baked pie.. thanks Kotaku

Evolution of Gaming

From the popular Atari games until now, the gaming industry has been at an all time high, Each day each week, each year the gaming industry grows billions upon billions of dollars, more than Hollywood witch is impressive giving that the advanced technology used to render games will only get better and more realistic.

In this recession of our time here in the world, many industries went down and out of business this year, but not gaming! the power house industry went up 10% for 2008 and is rising for 2009, People find that gaming takes allot of stress and worry out of them, being able to take your anger and aggression out on a video game is quite satisfying hence Being broke and not having anything else better to do. Companies like
Gametap.com and others are growing rapidly providing cross platform games available to everyone on PC for a low monthly cost.

Console vs PC wars are soon coming to an end, Xbox is offering cross platform games to the "Hardcore Gamers" making it convenient to use a PC or an Xbox 360 because of the Xbox live feature. Now PC gamers can create Xbox live accounts and play with friends on Xbox console machines offering new skill levels and challenges. Great thing about Microsoft Plug and play is their pheriphials, you can take a 360 controller and pop it in your USB drive and play your PC games all day giving you both options if you don't like the key board control that much.

Pc games are creating their own engines with their own Editor tools to help developers create new maps, new games, new models etc.. This will spring new life into the modding community as more and more companies strife to enhance the gaming experience for all gamers to get involved (Valve the creators of the Halflife series have released their creator tools to gamers who own the Halflife 2 game, providing gamers with modification tools to enhance and or create game modifications for their existing valve manufactured games. counter-strike was a modification from HL). Thousands upon thousands of maps were created off the halflife engine and Valve is still a high contender when it comes to the sales of products per year.

Predictions with Sony's new "Mind control" technology will be another innovative idea that will allow gamers to use the powers of their minds to shoot fire balls, shoot guns, and place objects in different settings.. Not much has been released on the new concept, many E3 Events have demonstrated the level of efficiency the new technology has, but all can tell, it's still in its infancy stage.

Every few years or so games become more and more enhanced graphically but less and less content is added within the game, making it more likely to be a multi player game. COD4 for instance is a Awesome game but its also a very short game, that's why the multi player scene is very active compared to single player, People tend to play games more so as a group or community rather than play by themselves, unless it is a RPG style game.

The wii is in my opinion is the game breaker when it comes to innovation, the new gaming style attracts gamers who never touched a game in their life.. Such a good concept that targets the family players and makes them interact on all new levels. The graphics arn't the greatest but that's what Nintendo does on purpose, its about quality and ease of gaming and how it is when you are playing with people, other than the 360 or Ps3 witch targets the more "Hard core" Gamers. All Consoles have their signature great titles, most can be found on PC as well witch gives people options of saving $300-$500 dollars on buying a whole new system that will be out of date with-in 5 years, computers will always be upgradable and disposable just because of the ease of software and hardware that can be found and salvaged.

The dreams of reality can come true within the next 20 years, just think were gaming can take us. Imagine flying over the ocean and using your imagination to create things that you can make appear in a blink of the eye? Or fighting a Medieval war and controlling a 1,000 man army at the swing of a sward? Graphics and the pheriphials we will be able to use and manipulate 20 years from now will be the most exhilarating experience man kind has ever encountered.

Stay tuned for some awesome Tutorials on Hammer Editor!
